World War I
The Battle of Somme was one of the biggest battles of World War I. It was fought near the Somme River in France from July 1st to December 1st. This battle was one of the most bloody and vigorous battles of all time. It was fought between the Britain, France, and the German armies. The British attacked north of the Somme River, while the French attacked from the south. The Germans defended their grounds. The battle ended in a stalemate and there were large amounts of casualties. There were about 420,000 British casualties, 200,000 French casualties, and 465,000 German casualties.
