World War I
The Battle of Verdun was fought from the 21st of February to the 18th of December, 1916, between the German and French armies. It was fought on the Western Front in the hills north of Verdun in north-eastern France. The conflict was one of the longest lasting and costly battles of World War I as it lasted for 303 days and it resulted in over 377,000 French casualties and 337,000 German casualties. Although early German offensives captured a significant portion of territory from the French, French counterattacks regained much of the land and the forts that they had lost in the beginning. The battle ended in a French victory.
