World War I
Following Austria-Hungary’s declaration of war on Serbia, Serbia announced its secret alliance with Russia. Austria-Hungary, in turn, declared its alliance with Germany. Germany demanded Russia to stay out of the conflict, yet the Russians refused and brought in their own ally, France. This resulted in Germany declaring war on Russia, and Great Britain also coming to France and Russia’s aid. Thus, the Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary) and the Allies (Serbia, Russia, France, and Great Britain) were formed.
